Political Projects

Occasionally, the artist takes on a special project that is included in a group show or series. These specialty projects are themed and promote community discussion on social and political topics.

Distraction

2022

"Distraction" was exhibited in the group show "Rochester Looking at Climate Change" at the Rochester Art Center, and at Pop-Up Rochester. See my panel intro here.  This piece is 7ft x 4ft x 7ft and is created with charcoal on paper, plywood, shower curtains, and paint.

This conceptual piece is a representation of how we humans spend much of our time distracted with suffering, death, and destruction that global warming will continue to cause. While there are clear channels to understanding and seeing these issues, characterized by peepholes in the obscuring film, often settling for something easier, instantly gratifying, and more pleasant. It obscures our ability to keep our earth’s decline on the forefront of governmental policies, personal decisions, and social discourse. This ultimately reduces our ability to make impactful change in a timely manner.

“Woman in Screen” is part of the artist’s exploration of how our concept of voyeurism has changed since the pandemic. As we have increased the time spent viewing people and their lives through a screen, the permission we feel we now have to perceive, objectify, and judge has spilled over into our interactions with people in real life. This piece was exhibited in the Smallart Gallery at the EVEN Hotel in Rochester, MN.
